Starwars, Marvel, or Lord of The Rings?

It’s Tuesday, November 6th,2018, its also midterm elections. I won’t be vehemently preaching to you that if you live in the United States that you should go out and vote, but I do hope you have already. Today I bring you a small blog post with a question.

Out of Star Wars, Marvel or Lord of The Rings which is your favorite?

This weekend my sister three of her friends a co-worker of mine and my Aunt and Uncle were sipping tea and snacking on cookies. I said I was having a tea party and my Uncle shows up Fully dressed in a SUIT. πŸ˜‚πŸ‘Œ

A question came up that lingered through the party
“The Marvel universe, StarWars and The Lord of the rings are all great,
but what’s your favorite?”

My sister without hesitation replied with
” I like star wars, but their movies have been getting progressively worse and lord of the
rings is boring”

her 3 friends nodded their heads in agreement, I don’t think my sister friends cared much about the question I didn’t hear much input from them.

Myself, Manish and my sister were what drove this conversation with some brief interjections by my aunt and Uncle.

Manish my Aunt and Uncle went with Starwars

he said that despite its darkness it has interesting ideas and it has a hopeful ending in comparison to Lord Of The Rings & He also favored SW because it’s lore is more fleshed out, we compared how many entries there are on Wookiepedia vs

it as a staggering 145,670 to 6,384

for him, the marvel verse is really random, where anything goes and it often doesn’t make much sense because of that. He also didn’t like that EVERYTHING is out for earth’s destruction

and Lotr he thinks is cool but didn’t like the overarching theme that the old fantastic stuff
is dying or going away which makes it a tad darker than the other two.

As for me I’d be hard pressed the chose between Starwars but If I had to choose id pick Lord of the rings as my favorite, The story and mythology resonates with me slightly more than Starwars. and I make an effort to watch LOTR once a year.

what differentiates LOTR and star wars from marvel?
For me at the end of the day, they are following the same formula the super Hero saves the day and it feels like a hollow victory. As a comparison When The ring / DeathStar is destroyed they save the day but at the same time it feels like a moral victory has been won, and the same can’t be said when the Avengers save Newyork from the Aliens.

  1. I’m defintitely going with Star Wars! Your sister is right… The Star Wars universe has been sinking in my heart for a while… I definitely don’t have the love for it that I used to. The original trilogy and the novel universe written by such masters as Timothy Zhan and Dave Wolverton (the Courtship of Princess Leia is one of my FAVOURITE Star Wars novels) and Barbara Hambly (because I also love “Children of the Jedi” Callista was my nickname because of that book!)
I have a bit of a beef with LOTR because of the wordy nature of the books… You could put out the Hobbit so succinctly, but it takes you 3 huge novels to give us LOTR?? Must have been paid by the word….
Btw, going to reblog this for you tomorrow!! I have 2 posts going out today, and I need more responses to this quandary!! πŸ˜˜πŸ˜‚

    1. Now I feel as unprepared as brining squirt guns to a highnoon showdown since I haven’t Even read Timothy Zahn or Dave WolvertonπŸ˜…πŸ˜…
I also had that same quip with lotr but if you read the Silmarilion then followed up by The Hobbit then Bilbos last song and then Lotr it becomes an engrossing read.

      1. … Maybe I’ll try that someday…. But, with all the reading I have on my plate it’s hard to make that investment… Especially since I have mathematically extrapolated how many books I can plausibly read in the rest of my lifetime and the number is staggeringly sad… (yes, I am a morbid geek…) πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  2. Well…this is just a very easy question for me: Star Wars, don’t even have to think about it. I do have to admit that I pretty much ignore the existence of Episode VIII because that movie for me at least destroyed Star Wars.
I wish they had stuck with the expanded universe lore, and just built on that. Timothy Zahn’s trilogy was just amazing, and that should have been the movies that were made…but alas it was not to be.
So…what’s the runner up for me? Marvel or LOTR?….well…also an easy question: Marvel. I just like the variety of it, as there is a superhero for everyone some where in there. It’s just a great universe and one that is expanding and growing every day. For me…it will never beat Star Wars though…that one is just pure magic…and despite having lost it’s former greatness…it’s still really good 😊
LOTR…last but not least…just never really became that magical place for me. I never finished the books, and the movies…except for maybe the first one, I didn’t really like a lot either (I know…blashphemy right? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚)
    Great post!! 😊😊😊

    1. No way! It’s not Blasphemy at the end of the day all 3 are titans of sci-fi and I enjoy all 3 of then , and I have yet to read Timothy Zahns trilogy .
I just added them to my to read pile πŸ˜†
And much how you ignore the existence of episode VIII , I personally think the hobbit trilogy movie is a stain on the Lotr universe
. Nicole also metioned she had a problem with the wording of the Hobbit and lotr. for me it became 🌈Magical🌈 after reading the Silmarilion and Bilbos last song .
Thanks for such a great comment!

      1. Well…I can’t recommend the Timothy Zahn trilogy enough! It’s the best series of Star Wars novels that I have ever read. It’s sadly not canon anymore, but at least they brought Thrawn back (one of the main characters of this series) so that’s awesome.
Lol…I read about 100 pages in the Silmarillion and I just quit….the amount of names and the story just felt at times that I was reading a bible lol πŸ˜‚
And of course, you are welcome! 😊

      1. Ha ha! Oh, the whole prequel trilogy can die and firey death, and I’ll be dancing naked around it while it burns!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ”₯
But, I’m talking about it from a UNIVERSE point of view… Marvel is just pretty much OUR universe with superheroes in it… I like the sci-fi difference in the Star Wars universe… Different weapons, different planets, different species.

      2. not all but they go to lots of planets in the Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and the aliens and weaponry is awesome in Infinity Wars. But each to his own, just didn’t want you to think of the Marvel universe just being earth.

      3. Ha ha!!! Believe me. I’m such a geek, I definitely know that it’s more than that… Maybe I’m just disillusioned with it all being shoved down my throat so much lately… I have a growing hatred for marvel with all the shows and movies coming out, and the fact that they all intertwine. It’s too much. I have way too much to do to keep up with this crap.

      4. πŸ€” so what you’re saying is it if there was a remake of Lord of the Rings with Chris Hemsworth , Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds all with Rippling abs , Lord of the Rings would be your new favorite series?

      5. Haha…erm…Yes?? πŸ€”πŸ€”
I just like the universe more, because there are so many cool charactes in it. And that’s the reason I like the universe better lol 😊😊Sorry….πŸ˜…

  3. Came from Nicoles reblog πŸ™‚
Star Wars is bottom of the heap for me, the same story every movie, though have not read the books so can’t comment on them. Plus Jar Jar Binks killed it dead.
The Hobbit and LOTR great books, and Tolkein a fascinating man. The movies did them justice I think but I couldn’t get through SIlmarillion, didn’t work as the others for me.
Marvel Universe is my favourite thing in the world, so many aspects to it, but mostly because Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddlestone are in it πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ well not really but eye candy always helps don’t you think πŸ™‚ Love how they have expanded it and looking forward to Captain Marvel.
Surprised you didn’t include the D.C Universe in your discussion, but maybe that’s because they’ve had so much bad crit for their movies, not always warranted.

    1. Definitely eye candy always helps!
      Galadriel is my eye candy😍😍
I’m also looking fowards to Captain Marvel!! When I think about that movie I wonder how they’re going to interject her story Into the Marvel Universe in the midst of the infinity War plot. sorry I totally forgot about DC it didn’t come to mind when I was writing this blog post , but I probably should have!

      1. No worries, it doesn’t get a lot of love, but I really enjoyed Wonderwoman and her part in the Batman movies. I also like Ben Afleck’s older version of Batman, but I’m probably in a small minority here!

      2. …. YOU’RE blasphemous!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ (sorry… Had no other comeback)
The REASON that I disliked Wonder Woman (there’s more… But, I can’t remember the other reasons because this one just pissed me off Ha ha!) was that those poor guys were dying in the trenches trying to fight that war, and she just waltzes is, walks across no man’s land, ends the war, and takes all the recognition?! WHAT A BITCH! People were fighting and dying for this and she’s the one who everyone is celebrating when clearly she didn’t even break a sweat?? Seems unfair.
All those guys were probably like “well, aren’t you fancy… If you were GONNA do that, couldn’t you have done it 2 years ago so we didn’t have to be here??”

  4. I didn’t really read the books but I’m going to talk in general. You see, Marvel world is somehow based on the true sites and cities, however, star wars and lotr created their own world. So that rules Marvel out.
Now if it comes between star wars or lotr, I would pick lotr, because it has a foundation of principles, it’s quite clear each group’s characteristics (strength, weaknesses, abilities….), on the contrary star wars doesn’t have that. Not to mention the invented language by J.R.R. Tolkien that is epic. That’s my personal opinion, I actually reviewed lotr in my blog, you can check the points I discussed. Thank you for this interesting post

  5. I had watched Star Wars at the cinema s a child, but little memory of this. Star Wars is fantastic but I feel the films have become worse and worse as the years have gone on. Lotr is untouchable. There’s nothing like it. And I can sit and watch the extended additions over and over again. As for marvel, there films are mostly light hearted my versitle, easy to sit down and watch at any time, with such a range of characters I wish I could, but I can’t give a definitive answer between lotr and marvel
